Santa Clarita, CA (January 23, 2019) – The family of an off-duty Los Angeles County Fire Captain are mourning his tragic death after his vehicle rear-ended a Caltrans vehicle on the 14 Freeway in Santa Clarita Wednesday morning January 23rd. According to California Highway Patrol Officer Josh Greegard, the incident took place around 11:30 A.M. on the northbound lanes of the 14 Freeway, a stretch of highway that runs from the 5 Freeway near Sylmar through to Bradys in Kern County.

A Caltrans worker, that was part of a street-sweeping detail, was driving a GMC 3500 pickup truck northbound within the center median at the time of the crash, “Initial information indicated the Jeep struck the rear of the Caltrans vehicle in the vicinity of the center median/HOV lane,” Greengard said. Los Angeles County firefighters responded to dispatchers to find one of their fellow firefighters trapped inside the Jeep SUV. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and was subsequently extricated from the vehicle by the Los Angeles Coroner’s office. The driver of the Caltrans vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for moderate injuries and is expected to survive.

The victim was identified as 63-year old Michael Shepard, a Los Angeles County Fire Department Captain according to the agency. Shepard worked at Fire Station 132 which is just 8 miles north of where the crash occurred along Sand Canyon Road. Fellow firefighters lowered a flag that sits outside their station to half-mast in honor of Shepard Wednesday night. Fire Department’s Memorial Management Team and peer counselors made their services available to the captain’s family.
